Alex Shackell

2024 Paris Olympics - Gold & Silver Medalist

Events: 200m Butterfly (6th place), 4x200m Freestyle Relay (Gold), 4x100m Medley Relay (Silver)

A 17-year-old senior at Carmel High School, Alex Shackell burst onto the international scene at the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the youngest member of the U.S. swimming team. Her journey began at age 8 when she wrote "Paris 2024" on a whiteboard, inspired by watching the Rio Olympics. Moving to Carmel specifically for its swimming program, Alex has dominated at the state level with multiple championships in butterfly events. She holds Indiana state records and has been a driving force in Carmel's historic 38-year state championship streak. Her Olympic dream became reality when she finished second in the 200m butterfly at the U.S. Olympic Trials, dropping significant time when it mattered most. Alex will continue her swimming career at the University of California, Berkeley.

Aaron Shackell

2024 Paris Olympics - 400m Freestyle

Events: 400m Freestyle (8th place)

At 19 years old, Aaron Shackell made history as the first swimmer to qualify for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team, winning the 400m freestyle at the Olympic Trials in dramatic fashion. A 2023 Carmel High School graduate, Aaron spent time at the University of California before returning home to train with the Carmel Swim Club in preparation for the Olympics. His breakthrough came with a stunning performance at Trials, dropping 1.5 seconds to upset a veteran field. Following in the footsteps of his father Nick, who swam for Great Britain in the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, Aaron has established himself as one of America's top middle-distance freestylers. He also competed in the 200m freestyle at Trials, showcasing his versatility. Aaron plans to continue his collegiate career at the University of Texas.

Drew Kibler

2020 Tokyo & 2024 Paris Olympics

Events: 4x200m Freestyle Relay (4th place in Tokyo, competed in Paris)

Drew Kibler represents the breakthrough generation of Carmel swimming, becoming one of the program's first two Olympic swimmers in 2021 alongside Jake Mitchell. A Carmel High School and University of Texas alumnus, Drew has established himself as one of America's premier 200m freestyle specialists. After finishing third at the 2021 Olympic Trials to qualify for Tokyo, he repeated the feat in 2024, securing his spot on his second Olympic team. Drew's success helped pave the way for future Carmel swimmers to believe in their Olympic dreams. Training under legendary coach Bob Bowman while maintaining ties to his Carmel roots, Drew exemplifies the program's ability to develop world-class talent. His consistency at the highest level of competition demonstrates the sustainable excellence of Carmel's swimming culture.

Rajeev Ram

While Carmel is known for its swimming excellence, Rajeev Ram proves the city produces world-class athletes in multiple sports. A Carmel High School graduate, Ram has become one of America's most successful doubles tennis players. At 40 years old, he competed in his third Olympic Games in Paris, partnering with Austin Krajicek to win the silver medal in men's doubles. This adds to his previous Olympic success in Rio 2016, where he won silver in mixed doubles alongside Venus Williams. Ram's longevity and continued excellence at the highest level of tennis demonstrates the strong athletic foundation provided by Carmel's sports programs. His success on the international stage, including multiple Grand Slam doubles titles, has made him one of Carmel's most decorated Olympic athletes across all sports.

Coach Chris Plumb

U.S. Olympic Team Assistant Coach - 2024 Paris Olympics

The architect of Carmel's swimming dynasty, Chris Plumb has led the Carmel High School program to an astounding 31 state championships (18 girls, 13 boys) and serves as CEO and head coach of Carmel Swim Club. His vision transformed Carmel from having just one Olympic Trials qualifier between 1973-2003 to producing multiple Olympic athletes. Under his leadership since 2003, the program has sent 41 swimmers to Olympic Trials. Plumb's "Operation Omaha" initiative in 2004 set ambitious goals that have been exceeded, culminating in three swimmers making the 2024 Olympic team. His philosophy emphasizes character development alongside athletic excellence, creating an environment where swimmers support each other while pursuing the highest levels of achievement. Being named to the Olympic coaching staff recognizes his exceptional ability to develop world-class talent.
